PayPal are better suited to explain what their Instant Payment Notification system is, but in short, it is a backend process (not using a web browser) where their server contacts a script or program on your server and verifies payments and all their details.
There are several reasons why this is very useful, for one it is very secure, because it happens independent of the end users web browser, meaning it's very hard to tamper with. Another use is that a script on your server (like IPN script) can perform any number of tasks for payments it knows have been made. ( the script delivers products when someone buys one)
Features:
- Will not allow a transaction with a paypal ID that has been used before. (security feature)
- Verifies that the payment was to your paypal account in order to stop funny business (security feature)
- Sends different emails based on pending (uncleared funds) or successful (cleared funds) payments.
